Hitting the Slopes

04 Feb

They were more like hills actually.  If you picture yourself standing on the edge of a gravel pit then you’ve got the right picture in your mind.  Regardless of the size of the hill we had a great family day yesterday snowboarding and skiing together.  It was a total last-minute idea that came together seamlessly and we had a blast!  Here is a photo recap of our day at Stony Mountain Ski Hill.

My not-so-fancy rental skis.

My not-so-fancy rental skis.

I had to rent downhill skis since I only own skate skis and that just wouldn’t work.  Mr. Hockey was super excited to try out his new snowboard and boots.

My hubby was excited to get back on his board after a very, very, very long extended break.  Like somewhere around a fifteen year break!  Unfortunately he would have to wait a little longer since his new boots wouldn’t fit in the bindings on his board.  That’s what we get for ordering off of eBay.  But he was able to rent a board at half price (because we’re cheap that way) after lunch time for a half day rate.

My snow angel.

So Mr. Hockey and I went up and down until his stomach started growling so loud it could have set off an avalanche. They had a small Ma & Pa restaurant in the chalet so nothing fancy but it hit the spot.  Plus, I was quite happy to cheat a little on the clean eating since I had worked hard at it last week.  And cheat I did!!  Hubby and I shared a poutine and I had a hot dog and a Coke.  Totally worth it in my books.

That's some serious cheese!

After lunch we headed back out to hit the slopes for another couple of hours of fun.

Showing some style.

I’m usually really bad with a camera (which you already know if you’ve been reading this blog for a while and have been subjected to my pictures) but this one came out really great and was a total fluke.  There’s just something about it I totally love!

The renegade.

Hubby had a great time once he got going and hadn’t lost his edge from years ago.  He even successfully managed a jump!

You can see the chalet at the back of the last photo so that gives you a clue as to how ginormous big the hills were.  It was great for our son though since this was only the third time he had been snowboarding.  Although you couldn’t tell what with the way he was zooming down the slopes!

Cuttin' a groove!

Cuttin’ a groove!

I, on the other hand, took it easy since it had been years since I had downhill skied and I had no need for another injury as the latest one is almost a thing of the past.  It sure is like riding a bike though!  It all came back to me pretty fast and I’m looking forward to the next time we go.

Ski bunny extraordinaire.

Wait till you see the cool socks Mr. Hockey scored at the ski hill!  They are Burton’s and I just couldn’t resist getting them when he mentioned his feet were cold.  I will do pretty much anything to keep my families feet warm because I really believe that if you take care of your feet it will be beneficial to the rest of your body.  Plus getting 25% off really sealed the deal because like I said we’re cheap like that!

Great sneaks! Oh wait, are those socks???

After skiing had taken everything out of us we packed it in and headed home.  But not without one more stop along the way.

A great end to a great day, Canadian style.

Do you downhill ski or snowboard?  With your whole family or solo?

Are you a sucker for a good poutine?  Have you tried different varieties?  I tried the butter chicken style before and it was amazing!

Do you wear super cool Burton ski socks and if so what pattern are you sporting?

This looks so fun! Seems like you all had a wonderful day together, and what a lovely thing to be able to do with the family – happy for you!

I’ve just lately been missing skiing a lot.. There’s not much snow to speak of here in Hawaii.. ;(
But I grew up skiing. My parents had me on downhill skis before I was 3 years old!
Hoping I’ll be able to go back home and get some skiing done in Sweden/Norway before all the snow is melted off the ground.

My brother lives in Denmark so I’ve always wanted to travel farther after visiting him to see Norway and Sweden. I’m sure it’s beautiful!
